香港大學教育學院副院長謝錫金指，近年不少學校推行「普教中」，用普通話教中文，老師普遍將教學生認字的時間花在教漢語拼音上，結果反削弱學生寫字能力。
謝提醒應集中火力教認字︰「學拼音是學拿枴杖，但真正要學的是行路。」又不諱言︰「現在這麼多發音辭典，不學拼音都可以學發音。」
This is how Hong Kong students/people learn putonghua. But, what this professor said is really not right/correct at all. That's why Hong Kong people have poor speaking and pronunciation in Mandarin. This professor should not teach people this way - using Pronunciation Dictionary to learn speaking Mandarin. It is wrong.
